Need: Breaking the Cycle of Violence and Abuse

The children and youth who are referred to Orr Shalom’s Family Group Homes are among the most severely abused in the country.  They have suffered severe emotional, physical and often sexual abuse, which has resulted in serious trauma. This trauma too often plays out as complex behavioral, educational and psychological problems.  These children have been let down by the very people whom they are meant to trust.  It is only with a great deal of love and consistent professional care that they can learn to begin to trust others, believe in themselves, and live up to their potential. Eleven such children and youth are currently living together in one of Orr Shalom’s therapeutic group homes in Mevasseret.

"I was afraid to go home, because there was no one there for me…
But now I have a safe place to be and people who love me.”

Therapeutic Family Group Home in Mevasseret

In 1980 Orr Shalom was the first to open a therapeutic family group home for severely abused and neglected children in Israel. Today Orr Shalom operates 25 of these homes throughout the country from Haifa to Eilat for close to 230 children. At the centre of family group homes are parents, often with children of their own, who have been selected, trained and supervised by Orr Shalom, and live together with between seven and eleven Orr Shalom children, ages 10-18 in a large home within the children’s community. Here, for the first time, they experience a warm and supportive family framework, and are treated by a devoted team of professionals, including social workers, psychologists, teachers and therapists.  It is in this environment that the children become equipped to break the cycle of violence and abuse.
